CHAPTER FIFTEEN
NONE OF MY ribs are broken, but there is a nice set of bruises forming for me to enjoy. Wulf waits for me in the hospital lobby, having had his own arm stitched up. As we walk out, he still favours his right foot, but since the doctor didnât prescribe him any crutches or anything, the injury canât be too bad.
We take a cab back to the headquarter, but keep the conversation on a casual level. Neither of us wants to talk about what it means that so many of the polluted spirits appeared here in Dublin. And as for the book that held our only trace of true spirit seekersâ¦
âIt couldâve been tidied up by a librarian,â Wulf says.
âJust this one?â I wonder how stoic a librarian has to be to continue doing their job while trees are trying to murder people in front of their doorstep.
âThey couldâve tidied up all of them.â Wulf shrugs.
Thatâs true. All we have is Roryâs panicked conclusion. As we make our way up north, I consider what it could mean. Why would anyone take the book? Could there be a sinister reason behind it? To what purpose?
âLooks like that TD lady is back.â
Wulfâs words pull me out of my thoughts. A fancy black car is parked outside the Red Stables. Our cab parks behind it, and Wulf pays the driver before we both make our way into the headquarters.
âI wonder what she wants,â Wulf muses as he holds the door open for me.
We donât need to wait long to find out. The moment we step into the hall, Camille comes up to us. âBrigid wants to see you in her office.â
âShe does?â When Camille nods, Wulf looks at me. âWant to tag along?â
Iâm not quite sure if heâs offering me some insight into spirit seeker politics or whether heâs asking me for emotional support. I say yes either way because Iâm curious to find out what this is about.
The door to the office is closed, but we can hear a heated debate behind it. â⦠I need to explain this! Do you have any idea how Iâm supposed to do that?â
Wulf takes a deep breath before he knocks on the door. The voices quiet down. Rory opens the door, looking relieved to see me. He frowns at Wulf but makes a sweeping motion to let us inside. âYouâre here, good.â
Brigid and Eileen are both facing each other. As usual, the Dublin commander glares at Wulf, while Eileen looks confused. âWeâre kind of in the middle of something.â
âI was told I was expected in the office,â Wulf says, stiffly.
Brigid snorts. âThere! That is the one you need to ask, Eileen. Not me.â
âAsk me what?â Wulf steps deeper into the room, while Rory and I stay at the door.
âWhat is happening?â I whisper at Rory.
He sighs. âThe spirit attack caused quite a ruckus up at parliament. We might not be able to separate from the SSA after all.â
âIâm confused, Brigid,â Eileen admits. âWhat does he have to do with this?â
Wulf crosses his arms, facing the two women in front of him.
